This is a private tour. The “Magnificent Nature Trails of Doi Inthanon” is a day tour that combines the two great nature trails on Doi Inthanon: the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail and the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail. We only offer this tour from November 1 until May 31 because the Kew Mae Pan Trail is closed from June 1 until October 31.

This long day trip for early risers will take approximately 10 hours. We depart early to take our time to hike the two trails at a leisurely pace with enough time for photo stops and rest. Besides these trails, we also visit the thundering Vachirathan waterfall, the mountain’s summit, and the two Royal Chedis. Furthermore, will also have a cup of coffee in the Karen village of Ban Mae Klang Luang.

The Wonderful Nature Trails of Doi Inthanon

Visit the highest mountain in Thailand

This is a private tour. No others will join you. We will pick you up from your hotel at 0700  for your trip named “The Magnificent Nature Trails of Doi Inthanon.” Today you will hike the famous Kew Mae Pan and Pha Dok Siew Nature Trails, two hikes that are totally different and complement each other. Doi Inthanon aka the “Roof of Thailand” is the highest mountain in the country (2,565 m). They declared the mountain a national park in 1972. The park has the highest diversity of forest types and bird species found in any single park in the country. There are many beautiful waterfalls as well. The summit of the park is about 90km southwest of the city of Chiang Mai.

The Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail

After having paid the entrance fee for the park (included) we will drive up to the summit of Doi Inthanon. Here we will first visit the Shrine of King Inthawichayanon, after whom the mountain has been named. The very short but beautiful Angka Nature trail is very close to the shrine. We hike this trail, after which we will continue to the start of the nearby Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail. This trail is only open in the dry season. The Hmong people from the village of Khun Klang manage the trail and are guides on the trail.

It is a lovely walk first through moist evergreen cloud forests to a viewpoint. From then on, you walk along a steep ridge with fantastic views over Mae Chaem and the Mae Pan River valley. Don’t worry: this hike is very safe. Let’s hope for sunny weather so you can fully enjoy the scenery. There will be enough time to take pictures. This hike is the most famous and popular trail on Doi Inthanon.

The Royal Chedis

After that, we will visit the Twin Royal Chedis, named “Naphamethinidon”, meaning “by the strength of the land and air,” and “Naphaphonphumisiri”,  meaning “being the strength of the air and the grace of the land”. The Royal Thai Air Force constructed these pagodas to honor the 60th birthday anniversaries of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and of his wife Queen Sirikit, in 1987 and 1992, respectively. From the Twin Royal Chedis, you have a great view of the Doi Inthanon mountain range, stretching to the lowlands.

The Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail and Thundering Waterfalls

Then it is time for a quick Thai lunch at a local restaurant. Along the way, we will stop at a roadside market, where the Hmong people sell products from the Royal Project are for sale. After lunch, we will drive a short distance to the starting point of the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail, our second nature trail of the day. The Karen people of the village of Ban Mae Klang Luang manage and maintain the trail and are guides on the trail as well. We will trek for about two hours, first down the majestic multi-tiered Pha Dok Siew Waterfall via bridges and stairs and then through the rice fields of the village. The trail ends in the village. Depending on the time, we can look around the village and enjoy a cup of coffee at Somsak’s coffee place.

After this, we return to Chiang Mai after a fantastic day. We will briefly stop at the thundering Vachirathan Waterfall. We will drop you off at the hotel at about 1800 and hope you enjoyed the fantastic nature trails of Doi Inthanon.
