Day 1 Chiang Mai – Doi Inthanon

Spectacular waterfalls

Your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel at 0800 for your Doi Inthanon family tour. This two-day tour features the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail, a fantastic nature trail in the Doi Inthanon National Park**. This trail takes about two hours to hike, depending on your speed and on the time we spend along the trail taking pictures and enjoying nature. We leave Chiang Mai and drive to the entrance of the Doi Inthanon National Park. Our first stop is the thundering, awesome Mae Klang waterfall. Next is the spectacular Vachirathan Waterfall, the most famous falls of Doi Inthanon. Then we continue to the summit of the highest mountain in Thailand. Please be aware that it can be very cold at the summit, even in the rainy season.

The Angka and Pha Dok Siew Nature Trails

We will hike the short but beautiful Angkha Nature Trail near the summit. Next, We will visit the two chedis constructed in honor of his Majesties, King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit. On a clear day the views from this location are amazing. After the royal chedis we visit the Hmong market, where local Hmong people sell products from the Royal Project, amongst others. We enjoy a late lunch near the Park Headquarters.  After lunch, we drive the short distance to the start of the Pha Dok Siew Nature trail. The Karen people from Ban Mae Klang Luang maintain and manage this nature trail, which is named after the Pha Dok Siew Waterfall.

We walk down the many levels of this beautiful waterfall. They have constructed steps, staircases and bridges to facilitate the descent. The thundering falls are an awe-inspiring spectacle year round. Most of the trail goes down until we hit the trail that will bring us to the Karen Village of Ban Mae Klang Luang. We will check into our bungalow on the edge of the village. You will have a private room with private bath and toilet. After a shower we head for the restaurant of Somboon, one of our friends in this Karen village. For dinner, you have the choice of Thai food, but they will prepare traditional Karen food on request.

Day 2 Doi Inthanon – Chiang Mai

Ban Mae Klang Luang, the home of Doi Inthanon coffee

Ban Mae Klang Luang is a lovely village amidst rice fields and forests. Breakfast will be at 0700 in the restaurant of Somboon. This morning we have a bit of time to walk around the village, drop by Somsak’s place for a coffee and learn about the production of coffee. The coffee plants grow in the forest around the village. The late King Bhumibol, Rama IX, introduced coffee as a cash crop in this Karen village decades ago. The village now is known for its delicious coffee and has become an important producer of the coveted drink. Even though many tourists visit this village on a daily basis, it is still a lovely and friendly place. Most tourists arrive on day tours after our departure.

The elephants of Thailand

At around 0900 we will leave the village It is a scenic road that will take us to the Mae Wang valley, where we will visit the elephant camp of Khun Yuttasak. He comes from Surin in the Northeast and takes care of twelve elephants. There are a couple of young, smaller elephants that are very playful. Feel free to interact with the elephants, take pictures, feed them some snacks or swim in the waterfall that runs through the camp. Elephants might join you, but please be careful. Although the elephants have been in captivity for a long time, they are still wild elephants. The camp has a very scenic location. During our time here you can help prepare elephant snacks or just enjoy their presence. It is up to you. We will have lunch at the elephant camp before we drive to the Wang River for our last activity.

Bamboo rafting on the Wang River

After that, it is time for an enjoyable trip by bamboo raft on the Mae Wang River. Bamboo rafts were important means of transportation in the days before the construction of roads. The Wang River is a safe and rather shallow stream so the ride is very relaxed. We will provide life jackets. Please wear them and take a look at our bamboo rafting policy. After this, we will drive back to Chiang Mai after two unforgettable days in one of Thailand’s most beautiful national parks. We will drop you off at your hotel. We hope you enjoyed our Doi Inthanon Family Tour.

** From November 1 until May 31 the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail is open. This trail is near the summit of Doi Inthanon. It is possible to do this trail instead of the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail in this period. Please inform us. We can also customize the program to include both trails in this period but there will be a small extra charge.
