Dara-Ang Tribal Textile Weaving Cooperative
The Dara-Ang Tribal Textile Weaving Cooperative is located in the village Mae Chon aka Pang Hoo in Chiang Dao District. The Dara-Ang are locally known as Palong or Palaung. We have been organising trekkings in this area for many years and are very familiar with the communities.
Since 2016 we have been working with Donna Bramhall of Haute Culture Textile Tours on a tribal textile tour in North Thailand, featuring unique workshops in villages of the Hmong, Dara-Ang (Palong or Palaung), Yao and Akha ethnic minorities. The first tour took place in January 2018 and was a great success. Apart from the textile tours Green Trails organizes a variety of different, mostly one or two day tours to these communities.
Haute Culture Textile Tours are immersive experiences which have been designed to bring textile loving enthusiasts to visit artisans of ethnic minorities. In these communities they learn traditional textile techniques. They also work with the artisans to improve existing products and develop new ones suitable for both local and international markets. We have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with these communities and their artisans. From the beginning Donna envisaged establishing tribal textile weaving cooperatives in these communities.
The village Mae Chon aka Pang Hoo has become the first pilot project. Donna spent six days in the village in July, 2018, and started to organise the cooperative. Much work has to be done but the beginning is there. There are seven women involved: Noi, Ong, Yong, Phakham, Nam Cong, May Loc and ……
They will accept orders for some of their standard products but also are willing to do bespoke or tailormade textiles. For Green Trails they product passport holders that we will give as a present to guests who book directly via our website. This will come together with a document with the picture and short biography of the artisan.
