Community-Involved Tours
Meet local highland people and learn from them
Our Community-Involved Tours allow you to meet local people and to learn from them. We work with a variety of communities in the North of Thailand. Many of these communities are highland ethnic minority villages such as the Dara-ang (Palong) village of Mae Chon in Chiang Dao. With most of these communities we have worked for a long time. In cooperation with villagers we have put together several activities such as cooking, dyeing a shirt with natural colors and back-strap weaving. We have included these activities in tours. It will allow you to learn something new and meet the people.

Our support of the samlor community of Chiang Mai
Since 2016 we have organized Community-Involved tours for the samlor community of Chiang Mai under the “brand” Chiang Mai on Three Wheels. The samlor is the traditional and iconic bicycle taxi that has plied the streets of Chiang Mai since the early 1930s. The eco-friendly mode of transportation is part of the cultural heritage of Chiang Mai. The drivers are old men and their income is uncertain. Joining one of our tours will support the drivers and help preserve the samlor as a Chiang Mai Heritage.

Community-Involved handicraft tours
Chiang Mai is the handicraft capital of Thailand. We support a growing amount of handicraft communities and artisans. An example is the community of artisans around Wat Sri Suphan, the Silver Temple. Ancestors of these artisans migrated more than 200 years ago from areas, now in Shan State in Myanmar. Here you can learn the technique of “repoussé” and “chasing”, which is hammering metal from the inside and on the outside. This is another example of one of our Community-Involved tours.
